The BMW M3 is arguably one of the best driver’s cars in the world. It’s poised, and balanced in the curves. The car reacts to your inputs, effortlessly. In the hands of the right driver, a 2013 BMW M3 is capable of amazing things.
If gasoline runs through your veins, then you’ve probably heard of the Lime Rock Park race track, or its owner, Skip Barber. In case you haven’t, Lime Rock Park is a road course, located in Connecticut. It was opened in 1957, and Lime Rock was the first racetrack to be designed using science, and safety principles. The 1.5 mile track is nestled amid the rolling hills, and serene countryside of the Berkshire Mountains. Spectators often bring a picnic lunch, so they can enjoy the racing action from atop a grassy hill, or beneath the shade of an oak tree. Lime Rock Park combines the pristine New England countryside, with the thrill of motorsports. And nearly everybody who is anybody in auto racing, has raced at Lime Rock.
Greats like Mario Andretti & Sir Stirling Moss have flung their cars through Lime Rock’s demanding turns. The race team belonging to late actor/salad dressing magnate/racer Paul Newman was once based here. And thousands still flock to Lime Rock Park to watch the excitement of American Le Mans, and Grand-Am series racing.
The 350-acre park is owned by renowned driving instructor Skip Barber. Having made a name for himself as a race car driver in 60’s and early-70’s, Barber retired and opened the Skip Barber Racing School. His teaching ability won him great praise, and his driving school has trained such notable drivers as John Andretti, Bill Elliott, Jeff Gordon, and Juan Pablo Montoya. Barber has also trained numerous celebrities like actor/racer Patrick Dempsey, Tom Cruise, Jerry Seinfeld, Charlie Sheen, and…Meatloaf.
Barber teamed with BMW to offer this limited edition M3, which not only celebrates the historic race venue, but it also seems more than capable of taming the legendary New England road course. The 2013 BMW M3 Lime Rock Park Edition comes in Fire Orange, with Anthracite / Black cloth seats, and Nappa leather trim. An alcantara-covered flat bottom steering wheel, and a carbon fiber roof panel are also part of the package. The M3’s 414-hp 4.0 liter V8 remains untouched, but the car receives other meaningful upgrades, such as the Competition Pack’s aggressive suspension, a 6-speed manual gearbox, a super-lightweight inconel-titanium muffler, and a full carbon fiber aero kit.
Only 200 examples will be produced, and each will have a special number plaque on the center console, a unique decal in the left rear window, and the obligatory Certificate of Authenticity. If you want your own Skip Barber designed 2013 BMW M3 Lime Rock Park Edition, prices start at $70k, with deliveries scheduled to begin in September 2012.
