The 2.91 mile Circuit de Catalunya, F1’s most favoured testing destination, witnessed a surprising starting grid after Lewis Hamilton’s pole-sitting McLaren was found in breach of a technical regulation and demoted to the back. Red Bull’s reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel resisted a stiff challenge from Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen to win the 2012 Bahrain GP. Spread over 57 warm and tyre corroding laps of the Bahrain International Circuit at Sakhir, the race took every ounce of Vettel’s grit and consistency to defend from the dogged pursuit of the resurgent Lotus drivers. Romain Grosjean drove brilliantly through the field from seventh to finish third on the podium, overtaken on the way only by team-mate Raikkonen, who finished 3.3 seconds adrift of the winner.

Nico Rosberg claimed his maiden F1 victory for Mercedes at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix with a perfectly controlled drive from pole position. The last time a works Mercedes entered car won a race was with Juan Manuel Fangio at the 1955 Italian GP. Back in F1 as a constructor after they bought out the 2009 championship winning Brawn GP team, their first victory was always going to be a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’. Rosberg delivered in style on a hazy Sunday afternoon as he led home the McLaren duo of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton in second and third.

Double world champion Fernando Alonso sealed victory for Ferrari in the rain affected 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix ahead of a spirited Sergio Perez. Alonso had to fend off a late race charge from the Mexican’s Sauber in an event red flagged for over an hour due to treacherous track conditions. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton crossed the finish line in third after starting from pole position. Alonso relied on his typically fiery driving style and perfectly timed pit-stops from Ferrari to take the chequered flag after 56 nail biting laps of the Sepang International Circuit.

Jenson Button delivered a peerless drive from start to finish taking victory in the 2012 Australian Grand Prix. Over 58 laps of the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, the Briton started second on the grid alongside his pole-sitting team-mate Lewis Hamilton. After launching off the start line better than Hamilton as the lights went out, he held the inside line into the first corner and then led the race all the way to the checkered flag leading home Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton in an exciting and eventful season opener.

F1 2012 Pre-season Test 2 at Barcelona Recap and Analysis

As the teams wrapped up testing in Jerez with effective shakedowns on their 2012 challengers, the testing season became more serious with all competitors proceeding to Barcelona for the second four day pre-season test from February 21 – 24. Mercedes GP launched their 2012 spec car, the F1 W03, hours before the opening day of testing got underway. The Circuit de Catalunya, which also holds Round Five of the 2012 F1 World Championship, pending confirmation that the Bahrain GP in April is on schedule, played host to 11 of the 12 competing teams this year. Hispania Racing (HRT) was the only team not in action following a failed crash test on their new chassis from a total of 18 FIA specified compulsory crash tests. Marussia F1 was the only team still running their 2011 spec car at Barcelona. While the first test was mostly about ironing out potential reliability issues on the new cars, the development programs to find pace gathered momentum.

2012 F1 (Formula One) Season Preview and Jerez Practice Recap

The 2012 F1 season has been flagged off with a progression of preseason tests, the first of which went through at Jerez in Spain from February 7-10. Following Red Bull Racing’s championship double last year with Sebastian Vettel and a few changes to the technical regulations put forward by the FIA, teams have entered a phase of hectic post-launch development to prepare for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 18.
