The Legacy of Karl Abarth and the Fiat 500 Abarth

The Fiat 500 Abarth is the edgiest and sportiest model in the 500 series. Well, at least as edgy as a quaint 1.4-liter turbo hatchback can be. While it’s far from the most menacing looking car on the road, it’s yet another testament to the principle that a car doesn’t have to be huge with loads of power on tap to be considered sporty. The 500 Abarth takes a different approach and to understand what it symbolizes you first have to know the history of the man it was named after, Karl Abarth.

Karl Abarth believed in building “small but wicked cars”, the philosophy which led to him becoming one of the most decorated racing professionals and builder of some of the most iconic cars of that time. His interesting story and racing legacy is detailed in the video below.

Toyota GT 86 RC – Track Ready FR-S

Scion FR-S news continues to flow in and the latest report concerns a low-spec version (GT 86 RC) that’s slated for release in Japan. This will be a stripped-down ‘club racer’ trim, for those who are hardcore enough to ride around with steel wheels and an un-painted bumper. The interior will be stripped down as well, the audio system, glove box, and air conditioning all being removed. The benefit is that it will be lighter on your wallet and lighter on the road course. It’s the ideal option for those who are into club racing or looking to do some serious modifications to the car. Unfortunately, it should be of no surprise that there’s no plans as of yet to release it in the US market.

Mazda is set to debut its new 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition at the upcoming Chicago Auto Show. The modifications for this limited-run model are rather subtle, but then again when you have the best-selling two-seat roadster, major revisions are not necessary. The Miata has long been one of the most respected track cars and enthusiast inspired daily drivers since its inception. New for the MX-5 Miata Special Edition will include a black-only Power Retractable Hardtop, marking the first time that a non-body-colored hardtop will be available in North America.

Definitely not too shabby for a four-door, but Toyota Racing Developments (TRD), their official racing and tuning division, will take things a step further by releasing an upgrade package for the GS F model line.

Lotus Names Producer Swizz Beatz as Vice President of Creative Design and Global Marketing

Lotus Names Producer Swizz Beatz
Lotus names rapper, producer, painter, and design Swizz Beatz and the companies VP of Creative Design and Global Marketing. Swizz Beatz whose real name is Kasseem Daoud Dean, may seem like a strange fit for the position and many people believe that he will ruin the brand with too much “bling” or over sized rims, what people fail to see is that Swizz Beatz is a car collector, owning rare vehicles such as the Spyker C8. Also, Lotus will use him as a PR guy as Swizz Beatz has a direct line to the mainstream media through music. Rappers who name drop brands are known to increase sales an attention to luxury items that are featured in they’re lyrics. Lotus is looking to increase popularity and increase brand recognition through one of the most popular producers in the music industry.

So while many may second guess Lotus’ judgment, I believe that this little hiring stunt will turn out well.
